Verlyn Flieger, geboren am 24. Februar 1933,[1] ist emeritierte Professorin am Department of English an der University of Maryland in College Park im US-Bundesstaat Maryland.[2] Sie beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit vergleichender Mythologie und moderner Fantasy, hier insbesondere mit den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens.[2]

Biographie

Verlyn Flieger studierte Englische Literatur an der George Washington University in Washington, D.C., wo sie 1955 als Bachelor of Arts abschloss.[2] Sie führte später ihr Studium an der Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., fort, wo sie 1972 den Grad eines Master of Arts erreichte und im Jahr 1977 promovierte.[2] Seit 1976 lehrte sie an der University of Maryland, wo sie schließlich im Jahr 2012 als Professorin emeritiert wurde.[2]

Neben ihrer akademischen Tätigkeit veröffentlichte Flieger die Romane Pig Tale und The Inn at Corbies' Caww, die Novelle Avilion und die Kurzgeschichte Green Hill Country.[3]

Arbeiten zu Tolkien

Verlyn Flieger ist vielfach als Autorin und Herausgeberin zu den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens in Erscheinung getreten. Schon in ihrer Doktorarbeit von 1977 beschäftigte sie sich mit Tolkiens Herrn der Ringe.[4] Später veröffentlichte sie drei Monografien zu Tolkiens Werken: Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkien's World[5] im Jahr 1983 (überarbeitete Ausgabe 2002), A Question of Time: J. R. R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie[6] im Jahr 1997 und Interrupted Music: The Making of Tolkien's Mythology[7] im Jahr 2005. Außerdem hat Flieger in verschiedenen Publikationen zahlreiche Aufsätze zu Tolkiens Werken veröffentlicht. Eine Auswahl erschien 2012 in der Sammlung Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on J. R. R. Tolkien.[8]

Auch als Herausgeberin war Verlyn Flieger mehrfach tätig. Seit der Gründung des seit 2004 jährlich erscheinenden wissenschaftlichen Journals Tolkien Studies ist sie dessen Mitherausgeberin.[9] Bereits zuvor, im Jahr 2000, gab sie zusammen mit Carl F. Hostetter eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen verschiedener Autoren zur History of Middle-earth heraus, unter dem Titel Tolkien’s Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth.[10] Zudem hat Flieger schon zwei Mal erweiterte und kommentierte Ausgaben von Werken Tolkiens herausgegeben: im Jahr 2005 eine solche von Smith of Wootton Major,[11] und 2008 zusammen mit Douglas A. Anderson eine Ausgabe von Tolkiens Aufsatz On Fairy-stories.[12]

Für ihre Arbeiten zu den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens wurde Verlyn Flieger drei mal mit dem Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in Inklings Studies der Mythopoeic Society ausgezeichnet, nämlich 1998 für A Question of Time, 2002 für Tolkien’s Legendarium und 2013 für Green Suns and Faërie.[13] Ihre Werke Interrupted Music (2006–2008), Smith of Wootton Major (2006) und Tolkien on Fairy-stories (2009 und 2011) waren teils mehrmals für den Preis nominiert.[13]
