Thomas Alan Shippey,[1] häufig auch Tom Shippey, geboren am 9. September 1943,[1] ist ein britischer Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler[2] und Autor zahlreicher Arbeiten zu J. R. R. Tolkiens Werk.[3]

Biographie

Ein Teil der Saint Louis University

Tom Shippey besuchte von 1954 bis 1960 die King Edward’s School in Birmingham, auf die etwa fünfzig Jahre früher auch Tolkien gegangen war.[4] Anschließend studierte er an der Universität von Cambridge, wo er 1968 den Grad eines Master of Arts erreichte; 1990 folgte ein Doktortitel derselben Universität.[5] Von 1972 bis 1979 lehrte er am St. John’s College in Oxford Alt- und Mittlenglisch, wo er bei einem Treffen J. R. R. Tolkien kennen lernte, der damals am Oxforder Merton College lebte.[6] Tom Shippey wechselte dann an die Universität von Leeds und übernahm dort die Professur für Englische Sprache und Mittelalterliche Englische Literatur, die Tolkien in den Zwanziger Jahren innegehabt hatte.[7] Nach vierzehn Jahren in Leeds ging er in die Vereinigten Staaten an die Saint Louis University im Bundesstaat Missouri,[2] wo er den Walter J. Ong Chair of Humanities übernahm.[8] Ihm zu Ehren erschien 2007 die von Andrew Wawn herausgegebene Schrift Constructing Nations, Reconstructing Myth: Essays in Honour of T. A. Shippey.[9] Im Jahr 2008 wurde Shippey emeritiert.[8] In seiner akademischen Laufbahn beschäftigte sich Shippey hauptsächlich einerseits mit mittelalterlicher Literatur, sowie andererseits mit moderner Fantasy und Science-Fiction, hier besonders mit den Werken J. R. R. Tolkiens.[5]

Tom Shippey verfasste mit Der Weg nach Mittelerde[10] und J. R. R. Tolkien: Autor des Jahrhunderts[11] zwei Studien über Tolkien. Für beide wurde er jeweils mit dem Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies der Mythopoeic Society ausgezeichnet, in den Jahren 1984 und 2001.[12] Für Author of the Century wurde ihm außerdem 2001 ein World Fantasy Award verliehen.[13] Beide Bücher sind unter anderem ins Deutsche übersetzt worden.[14][15] Daneben veröffentlichte Shippey zahlreiche Aufsätze und Rezensionen zu Tolkiens Werken; eine Auswahl der Aufsätze erschien 2007 unter dem Titel Roots and Branches: Selected Papers on Tolkien.[16]

Neben seiner akademischen Tätigkeit arbeitete Tom Shippey unter dem Pseudonym John Holm zusammen mit Harry Harrison an den Science-Fiction-Reihen West of Eden und Hammer and the Cross.[1][5]
